Question:
Should I travel to Cuba?

A few friends and I have become interested in visiting Cuba next year, now that diplomatic relations have been restored. As I've done some more research and reading on traveling to Cuba, it doesn't seem as appealing as I thought it would. The articles and blogs I've read gave off the feel that it kinda wasn't that good. For example, as an American, my debit/credit cards would be useless (from what I've read) and the only money you can get is the money you bring with you (I guess that could change if the US lifts the travel ban but idk). Additionally, I've read that a lot of the people are liars and will constantly try to scam you (although, I guess to be fair, that could be said of any place). I also read that it's very expensive to get online, which I was surprised to read. Finally, I've read consistently that all the girls are hookers.

Idk, just any advice or thoughts from people who have visited before? Is it worth going or should we shoot for a different place. I don't travel all that much, at least internationally, so I want to pick a place that I will really enjoy and not regret going to. Thanks for the help!

Things between the United States and Cuba are changing fast, and will definitely be different by "next year".

Your credit/debit card may or may not work. It is not a big deal. Take cash. You are limited to how much you can spend anyhow.

There are scammers and con artists everywhere, even here at home in the United States. They lie, they cheat, they steal...and very often, they target tourists. It happens everywhere. You will not find a country where you are safe from that, not even at home!

If you stay in a hotel, you may have WiFi access. You can purchase WiFi access otherwise. However, this is definitely one of those things that are bound to change quickly in the near future. But, really you are in CUBA so enjoy CUBA and do not worry about getting online.

No, not all the girls are hookers.

I think it is a great opportunity and it is somewhere I will be visiting shortly. I have done a lot of research in preparation, and I can say that some of what you are mentioning you are worrying too much about. I would not go if you are going to be judgmental or negative. It is definitely going to be different than home...but that is the purpose of going, right?

Once the travel ban for US tourists are lifted, I'm sure the use of US credit cards will be also. I have heard that Cuba will soon be allowing master card, but not sure when. All girls are not hookers, but Cuba has them, just as every country has. When it comes to young women, the young men will lie through their teeth to impress them. ( brings back old memories) There are people that run a scam trying to sell fake Cuban cigars.

We have been to Cuba several times, and enjoyed the people very much. They are very friendly and helpful, and the country is probably the safest place to visit as a tourist. It is beautiful there, and I'm sure you will enjoy yourselves. You can't always believe what others say or write. You have to see it for yourself to get the real feel of the country.

I'm Canadian, and have met US travelers in Cuba several times, and they love it there, and they are treated just as well as those from other countries.

Don't be afraid to give it a try.

I would go. Get there and see it before Big American Tourism destroys the place.

So what you can't use a debit card? Bring cash like the old days.

Right now Cuba is relatively unspoiled by tourism. This is the best time to go before the US plants a bunch of McDonald's and Starbucks there.
