My fiance is very fair skinned, I am on the darker side. I just don't want to go away and take a chance on one of us burning, is tanning before a safer way to tan or would it be better to get tanned naturally on our trip?

I know it's not good for me...but I tanned before my cruise and I was happy I did. It gave me a base tan and I felt better about wearing shorts and tanks. I also used sunscreen on the trip because the sun is so hot there, and I didn't want funny tan lines.

Just be careful and tan gradually. I know it's not really good for our skin, but in moderation..?..

I always tan before going on vacation to the Caribbean. While it is indeed not good for your skin over the long run, it's even worse for your skin to burn really bad. I'd say if you stick with only going to the tanning salon on these occasions, you shouldn't have a problem.

I am sorry, but I must disagree with the answers given.

Just use appropriate tanning oils/screens/blocks.

Dangers of tanning at salons are horrible. My sister is dermatologist and sees so many horrible skin cancers, many of which are contributed to tanning booth exposure

Actually, tanning your skin before actually going out into the sun is a better way to prevent sunburn or overtanning because it is controlled. You did the right thing!

Get tanned naturally so you don't look orange or end up like the girls in Final Destination 3
